Hi,

Thank you for posting in Community, we apologize for the inconvenience caused.

As per your query, I understand that you wish to set your Windows Update settings to such that you can download the updates as per your convenience.

In such a case, I would like to inform you that, it is not possible for you to schedule the download of updates. However, you can schedule the updates to install at a time which is of your convenience. To do so follow the steps below:

  • Open theStart menu and typeWindows update in the search bar.
  • Click onWindows update.

  • Click on Advanced options under Windows updates.

  • Select theNotifies to scheduled restart form drop down menu under theChoose how update are installed.

Note: You will be prompted to scheduled restart when to install the updates after the updates are downloaded.

Hope this information helps.

Thank you both for your reply.

I have just checked and I must have done this already in the past as it is set to "notify is to schedule restart".

I'm using a computer which is only about three months old and it was upgraded from a retail version of Windows 8.1 which I purchase separately. I do use a lot of resources on the computer, for example I often have several word documents open, several webpages, Skype, Evernote and Nuance Dragon pro but the computer is maxed with 16gb of ram so I can't see that could be the cause. The symptom is as follows,

The computer slows down and I temporarily get "is not responding", the hard drive is usually going and then eventually everything freezes-I tap ctrl-alt-del leave it for five minutes and if nothing has happened I end up holding the power button down. Often when the machine reboots it says things like "configuring updates" which is what made me think that the computer updating is using the resources?

Any ideas on how I can make my computer more stable would be appreciated.

Many thanks,

Martin

take control of windows 10 update: follow these steps

search>gpedit.msc (right click use as administrator)>Computer configuration>Administrative Templates>Qos Packet Scheduler> limit reservable bandwidth (right click edit)>enable>set to 60

gpedit.msc (right click use as administrator)>Computer configuration>Administrative Templates>Windows Components>Windows Update>Configure Automatic Updates (right click edit)>enable>set to Notify for download and notify for install

Setting>update and security>check for update

Setting>update and security>advance options>choose how update are installed>set to Notify for download and notify for install

Setting>update and security>advance options>choose how update are installed>choose how updates are delivered>off or pcs on my local network

by doing this on all my networked pcs I am now able to surf and stream without windows update hogging all my bandwidth

I believe this will also help you, you can set the reservable bandwidth to less than 60 if you like but not 0 or 100

the default is 80

with this set to 60 I am able to stream and surf while updates are downloading on all my pcs

The install is not causing the problem - it is the download killing the network with multiple Win 10 PCs but not server.

Downloading during the day is ridiculous.

I have had this problem since upgrading to Win 10 but in my case, these automatic update downloads are costing me money !  I have a 5GB 'cap' on data with a further 5GB if used between 01.00 and 05.00 daily.  This is when I want the downloads to take place !   All data exceeding the daytime 5GB limit is charged at an horrific rate by my ISP.

I'd prefer NO DOWNLOADS to the existing situation.
